Welcome to the first blog and episode for Techy Tool Time with Rachel. This series will be held every Wednesday at 2 pm LIVE on Facebook or Periscope. I will post a blog update with any links that maybe relevant to the discussion and give an overview of what was covered in that Techy Tool Time with Rachel episode.

For the first Techy Tool Time with Rachel I covered a few accessories for my mobile tools I’ll be trying out throughout the semester.

Why the inconsistency in recording platforms? Well this is the first thing I am testing this semester! I am new to Facebook live and I used Periscope in the spring for my APPetizer Wednesday series. I am excited to test  out both to see which one provides good quality videos, good viewer interaction, viewership numbers, downloadability, and editing possibilities.

I usually record with my phone but phone stability is a big problem while recording. After a little research I stumbled across the idea of an Octopus Tripod. This can be used as a selfie stick, a standard tripod, and has flexible legs to be used as a tripod on various surfaces/heights. The Octopus Tripod from GorillaPod, $60, is what I found many people who make videos use, but this was out of my budget. The Octopus Tripod from FLFLK, $14, had great reviews, is plastic (aka durable) and comes with a clicker to take photos from far away. We will see if it stands up throughout the semester since it is lower cost. I already know I would love a way to use a tripod like this with my iPad but so far have not found an attachment for that, only your cell phone and camera attachments.

I am finally jumping into using my bluetooth keyboard! Another mobile fellow users hers all the time and even lets her students use it. The Microsoft Wedge Keyboard is almost a regular size keyboard, has a real keyboard feel, is light to carry, easy to pair, and works universally with all devices. I am using it with both my iPad and my samsung s5 cell phone. So far it is really nice to use with my android phone and I am a little indifferent with my larger ipad air.

The journey to obtain the perfect stylii is endless. I discuss our first quest for the perfect stylii here:

Is the plural of stylus styli?

It looks like I’ve been using my favorite stylus for more than a year!!! We learned from our first trial of stylus that the mesh tip was the best of many worlds, low cost, durable, and good writing abilities. But with it being discontinued for more than a month I can not wait to start the new quest. We are exploring the CCIVV mesh tip stylus and the Fenix mesh tip stylus. Both of these cost around $10 for a 4 pack and have replacement tip possibilities.

Check back with the blog in about six weeks for an update on what I thought after using these tools for a while.

I hope to see you guys next week LIVE @Glazenerchem and @psmobs or check back here for a Techy Tool Time with Rachel update!! Post comments and suggestions below.
